Piyush Chawla picks his playing XI for India’s opening game in Champions Trophy 2025

The anticipation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is at an all-time high as cricketing giants gear up for the marquee tournament, set to be held in Pakistan and the UAE. This edition marks the return of the prestigious event after an eight-year hiatus, making it a highly awaited spectacle. With the world’s best teams competing for glory, fans are eagerly waiting to witness thrilling encounters, strategic battles, and standout performances.

India, one of the favorites for the title, will kick off their campaign against Bangladesh in what promises to be a high-intensity clash. With the tournament just around the corner, former Indian cricketer Piyush Chawla has shared his ideal playing XI for India’s opening match.

Piyush Chawla’s playing XI for India’s opener against Bangladesh

As discussions continue over India’s best possible lineup, Chawla has put forward his preferred XI, featuring a mix of experienced campaigners and match-winning performers. The former leg-spinner has chosen a balanced side that emphasizes stability at the top, a dependable middle order, dynamic all-rounders, and a strong bowling attack.

Star batters to lead the top order

Chawla’s playing XI begins with an explosive top order comprising India’s premier batters—Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli. The trio brings experience, consistency, and an attacking mindset that will be crucial in setting a solid foundation. Rohit and Gill, as openers, have been India’s go-to pair in ODIs, while Kohli’s presence at No. 3 ensures stability and the ability to anchor the innings if needed.

Solid middle order featuring Shreyas Iyer

The middle order is key to India’s success, and Chawla has backed Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul to handle the crucial phase of the innings. Iyer’s ability to counter both spin and pace makes him a vital cog at No. 4, while Rahul’s adaptability and experience in big tournaments further strengthen the lineup.

Dynamic all-rounders for balance

In a bid to maintain flexibility, Chawla has picked Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja as the team’s all-rounders. The trio add depth to the batting lineup while also bringing control and wicket-taking ability with their different style of bowling. Their presence ensures India has reliable options in both departments, providing crucial balance to the playing XI.

Bowling attack featuring Mohammad Shami

For the bowling department, Chawla has opted for a strong attack, selecting Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah (if fit). However, with Bumrah officially ruled out of the Champions Trophy, India will have to rely on their pace arsenal, with Shami expected to lead the attack. The veteran pacer’s ability to generate movement with the new ball and deliver lethal spells at the death makes him a key asset. Meanwhile, Kuldeep’s wrist spin will be crucial in breaking partnerships and controlling the middle overs.
