The ODI series between Sri Lanka and Australia kicked off on Wednesday (February 12) at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. After winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat first. These two matches are crucial for Australia as they serve as their only preparation ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025.
However, with multiple squad changes, the team has faced unexpected challenges. One of the most significant omissions from Australia’s lineup for this game is their experienced fast bowler, Mitchell Starc.
At the toss, Australian skipper Steve Smith mentioned that Travis Head, Josh Inglis, and Glenn Maxwell were not part of the playing XI. However, he did not address Starc’s absence. Reports had already confirmed that Starc opted out of the ODI series as well as the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.
The 35-year-old left-arm pacer appeared to be struggling with an issue in his left ankle while bowling during Sri Lanka’s second innings in the final Test at Galle last week. He was only able to complete four overs before returning to Australia soon after the match. While the exact reason for his withdrawal remains undisclosed, Starc has requested privacy regarding his decision.
Cricket Australia (CA) has backed Starc’s choice, recognizing his dedication to the national team and his contributions to international cricket.
“We completely support Mitch’s decision. His commitment to representing Australia is undeniable, and he has always prioritized delivering his best for the team,” said George Bailey, the chairman of the national selection committee, as quoted by Cricket.com.au.
